If you do even a little online research on purchasing email lists, you’ll notice that they tend to get a pretty bad rap. Whether it’s warnings about email deliverability issues, risks to your IP reputation, or legal compliance issues, many marketers would have you believe that purchasing email lists is always, without exception, a bad idea.
We’re just going to be straight with you and tell it like it is: The truth is, most criticism of purchased email lists isn’t entirely unfounded. However, most of these issues arise only when people attempt to use purchased lists without having the technical capabilities or email marketing expertise required to handle them properly. In the right hands, purchased or rented email lists can be a perfectly legitimate and effective way to reach new customers. For this reason, we do rent email lists; however, unless you will be using these email addresses purely for reference purposes, we only recommend buying or renting an email list if you’re already a seasoned email marketing expert with an established track record of successfully utilizing purchased lists.
If that doesn’t describe you, does that mean you’re stuck only emailing leads and customers you already know? Not at all. Email marketing is still a very effective prospecting tool for finding new customers that every marketer should keep in their back pocket. In that case, all we ask is that you strongly consider a managed email broadcast for maximum results.
Our friendly email marketing experts are happy to walk you through your options and discuss the pros and cons. Simply give us a call at (888) 578-3282 for a free email marketing consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!
Should I purchase an email list?
Not sure if purchasing an email list is right for you? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
Do I have an email deployment platform?
And no, MailChimp doesn’t count. In fact, most well-known email marketing services don’t allow their users to use purchased email lists at all. Email platforms like MailChimp and Constant Contact are great for keeping in touch with your existing clients and nurturing your in-house email list, but they’re generally not designed to be used for prospecting or cold emailing, and they are are quick to shut down accounts that encounter any deliverability issues that can arise if a purchased list isn’t handled correctly.
Do I have experience sending large volumes?
Sending a broadcast of 5K versus a high-volume deployment of 50K+ is a very different game, and ESPs will often throttle your sending or shut down your account entirely if you send such a large broadcast without an established history of volume. This is why it’s important to work your way up to high volumes by gradually warming up your IP addresses and maintaining rotating IPs and domains in case one does get shut down. Otherwise you may be left with an email list, but no way to actually broadcast to it. Even worse, your domain reputation may be jeopardized as a result.
Do I have a plan for permissioning my email list?
When we conduct managed email broadcasts, everyone receiving your email has opted in to receiving emails from us, so we can guarantee CAN-SPAM compliance and no risk to your domain reputation. On the other hand, when you purchase an email list, those people have consented to the release of their email address to third parties, but they have not specifically opted in to receiving emails from you. This means you are responsible for obtaining their consent to receive your emails, and we cannot guarantee compliance with federal regulations.
Do I have a plan in place for ongoing email hygiene?
Email addresses are by far the most perishable data product you can purchase. On average, between 10% and 15% of your email list will decay every single month. Broadcasting to an unhygiened email list that’s over even 90 days old can cause your bounce rate to spike, which may jeopardize your server status and get you shut down by your ESP. Before you purchase an email list, make sure you have a rigorous email hygiene process in place to plan for the inevitable list decay that will occur.
If you answered “no” to any of these questions, we strongly recommend that you consider our managed email broadcasts instead.
